The second part of the two-parter took on a less frantic tone than that of last week's episode. The environment of Hawaii lends itself to a more serene tone that lingered throughout the episode even though there were wacky things going on.
After getting a call from his brother, Jay takes it upon himself to get in shape and he isn't quite what he is. He throws out his back before dinner, leading Phil to look for them. They end up on top of each other in a very awkward scene.
Mitchell wants to go exploring all over the place and assumes Cam does too, except Cam isn't as adventurous as he thinks. Eventually, Mitchell settles down to do nothing and enjoys what he's been missing out on. Lily suffers the consequences as she is left alone in the elevator. Cam and Mitchell frantically run around while Phil and Claire miss Lily as well. Eventually, Gloria finds Lily and hands her back.
The Dunphys still can't get a break in Hawaii. Claire is still in mom mode and rightfully so. Haley gets drunk and starts throwing up, allowing Claire to teach her an important and slightly misleading life lesson. And Luke shares a room with Manny. I think a disaster would be the right thing to call it. Even through all of this, Phil pulls through by renewing his wedding vows with Claire, giving her to experience they never had on a honeymoon.
I'm starting to thing some of my brain signals are getting crossed. I still get caught up by the names Phil and Jay, have to check to check who's who even after 23 episodes. Does anyone else have this problem?
