After the near perfect episode last week, it was hard not to be disappointed by the episode. "English as a Second Language" tried to bridge the realistic and more unrealistic aspects of the group dynamic and it didn't really click for me.
Annie is seriously insane and at the prospect of not having Jeff in the group next year, sabotages the class by ratting out that Senor Chang doesn't have credentials. That brings in a new teacher--one who will test them on the whole book. Jeff outs Annie and forces the group to ignore her pleas. From there, a weird leap happened that left me confused an unsatisfied. Before taking the test, Shirley tells Jeff that Annie is talking to Chang. In Spanish, they start conversing about Annie being killed, so they get up, find Chang happy and Annie alive. They take the test, pass, and decide to take anthropology next year. Other than Annie's hint at liking Jeff and we already know she does, not much was added to the relationship between the group members.
Troy was off in reverse Good Will Hunting, which worked fine for the most part and served more as a funny reference than adding to the relationship between Abed and Troy.
