Review - Miami Medical Season 1 Episode 1 Pilot

Jerry Bruckheimer's newest offering is Miami Medical, an uninventive medical drama with the extremes of melodrama and silly situations. This all comes out because of the first scene, a wild action ride where a cafe first explodes, sending a pregnant woman and her husband in their car careening around into the street. To top things all, a truck slams into them. The pregnant woman is still alive and the husband has a piece of glass stuck in her carotid artery.

From there, we meet the doctors who we don't learn much about other than their names. The most we get out of the characters is the immediate departure of William Rayner (Andre Braugher), the head of the team, who has a break down and takes off all his clothes. Immediately we learn: this isn't for everyone!! The other doctor who stands out is Dr. Proctor (Jeremy Northam), the cool guy with the British accent. He's the new big guy in town.

In the end all the victims in the episode except for one survive. The emotional scenes are all cheesy and go on too long, bringing the rush of the trauma ward to a complete halt. The formula is tilted more towards saving the victims and the victims getting better than anything else which is the biggest problem of the show.

For all its faults, Miami Medical, is actually pretty entertaining at times. The rush to save patients got my heart beating slightly faster. The cinematography, in the style of CSI: Miami, has the same amazing post-production yellow. The outdoor shots are absolutely gorgeous. While that doesn't qualify for good television, the meager offerings on Friday night would leave Miami Medical as a viable choice.

Score: 7.8/10
