I usually like whatever Cam and Mitchell are doing, but "Benched" was one of their worst outings. Now that Mitchell doesn't have a job, he is staying at home with Lily while Cam is off working. Both of them want to do the opposite, but doesn't want to seem obtuse to the notion of occasionally switching roles. Jay, who is a complete tool the entire episode, gets Mitchell a job interview. Together, Mitchell and Cam go to the person's house and it's an awkward mess. Mitchell is talking and Cam is panicking uncontrollably to the point of annoyance. They end of resolving their issues, but end up smashing the rich's guys car, so Mitchell has to work.
After the haranguing and harangued basketball coach leaves, Phil is ready to take the role, but Jay steps in and blocks Phil from helping. They finally talk things over and Phil gets his shot. The team still sucks, but at least Phil is acknowledged. The story was rather bland, but had good moments, so I enjoyed it more than the Cam and Mitchell stuff.
I liked the Claire and Alex the best, because it combined the heartwarming family aspect, Alex growing up, and the the embarrassing family humor in the end. However, it was a small portion of the episode.
Score: 8.6/10
