The Mentalist took a different turn last night. Rigsby, Van Pelt, and Cho were almost nonexistent, the CBI headquarters was shown only a few times, and there wasn't even a body after the first act. I liked the change of pace. Procedurals get stale, and the lame camera crew episode was indicative that the writers are looking for more.
A dangerous virus is let out at a laboratory, leading for the dying scientist to call Jane. She dies just after talking to her daughter, and the search is on. Several people are interviewed, affairs are uncovered, but there's no clear lead.
The ending took another turn with Jane becoming that terrible person who creeps out every so often. He fakes letting the virus out, convincing everyone that they will die from the virus. Now, his plan worked in the end, and the murderer was caught, but Jane didn't have to trick everyone. Surely there were other options. But Jane does things for his own amusement even if it hurts other people. Lisbon's punch to the nose was hardly what Jane deserved. The killer was also a random guy who was selling the virus, so the catching of the killer wasn't satisfying.
