"Human Target" remains one of the most consistently entertaining shows on television. The ratings, however, do not bear that out. Despite several American Idol lead-ins, the ratings haven't been stellar which is diappointing.
One of the biggest problems is the humor which the writers add a fair amount of. It was glaringly obvious in an otherwise topnotch episode. The comedy is almost solely based on adversarial relationships where one person makes a derisive comment to another, and they start squabbling. It can only go so far and gets tedious after a while.
Chance travels to South American upon the request of his old flame, Maria, to save an archaeologist who has found millions of dollars in gold bullion. At first, Maria double crosses Chance, but with the soldiers quickly advancing on them, they have to work together. Winston and Guerrero get their plane to a landing strip while Chance, Maria, and the archaeologist work their way across the jungle. Chance gets away, amazingly with a net and hook, but not before telling Maria he never wanted to leave her. It's a bittersweet farewell befit for Chance.
We know that Chance has done all sorts of things, but there seems to be no common tie except that he's a mercenary. He's experienced loss in his life and dealt with many problems. He's a complex character that doesn't act like one. In fact, he's very simplistic. Each episode, you can expect Chance to be an expert at something, and do the right thing in the end. There's no real moral dilemmas he faces.
