It looks like this is the final death knell of Scrubs. Finally, after seven years on NBC, a fantastic send-off on ABC for most of the character, and a season with new characters, I think we can close the book on what has been a genuinely funny and heartfelt show. By a true miracle, Scrubs could get a 3.0 and be renewed, but based on the ratings it's been getting, I think it's safe to say the show is done.
There will probably be lots of grumbling about how the new cast and season sucked, and how it ruined the reputation of the show. I may have agreed at the beginning of the season. J.D. reverted back a few years, acting childish and annoying, the new characters weren't fleshed out yet, and the writers didn't seem to have a solid game plan of how to transition the old cast to the new cast. I'm still not sold on the retooled Scrubs, and I'm not sure I would even watch the show if it did not have the Scrubs label. However, it is still a solid comedy, and there's nothing to be ashamed of.
Seeing how great a prodigy Drew is for Dr. Cox, Turk looks to find one for his own, but can't get one. Along comes Cole, the bright-eyed, eager student hungry for knowledge and skills. Right... Dr. Cox manipulates Cole into wanting to become a surgeon with suggestions of ninjas and horror films. Turk sets off to break Drew, but Cole is surprisingly resilient. He folds once Turk throws the book at him. Even then, Cole doesn't give up, ripping up Lucy's horse dolls so he can sew them up as practice.
Denise seems willing to lay it all on the line, and get much, much closer to Drew. A hole appears in the wall between their rooms, presumably from a water leak upstairs. As we later learn, Denise made the hole herself. She begins to move her stuff into Drew's room, and Drew is very hesitant and puts a curtain up between their rooms.
Lucy has to prepare a speech for the cadaver Ben's family, and she tries her hardest to make a speech honoring the dead person. She is startled to find out he was a real douchebag in real life.
The final message is that people can adjust their expectations. Turk embraces Cole as his prodigy, Drew agrees to move in with Denise, and Lucy changes her speech to reflect on Ben the cadaver, not Ben the person
"Our Thanks" didn't give a big farewell to the characters as "My Finale" did; it was another regular episode. Overall, it was a good episode with the same fantastic character development that made the show so great. It would be great if the show went on, and there is still lots of potential given the parabolic rise in quality through the course of the season, so I'll be a little saddened when the official announcement comes down.
