Other than a few new revelations and a twist at the end, "Out of the Box" was another standard episode that was fun to watch but hardly engrossing. My opinion of the show has changed drastically since the pilot. I thought the episodes would have some variation, but there has not been much.
Fowler has a higher up only heard through the phone who is directing Fowler to carry out Mentor. Fowler, attempting to stop Peter from stopping Neal, ransacks Elizabeth's office. Peter comes and punches Fowler, earning himself a two-week suspension.
Marsha Thomason, who will become a regular in Season 2, reprised her role as Diana. Peter gets her to investigate Fowler, and she downloads all the dirt from his computer. Using the data, Peter forces Fowler to tell Peter where Neal is.
Having given the music box to Fowler, Neal prepares to get on a plane and get away with Kate. We see her briefly enter the plane. Peter and Neal say their heartfelt goodbyes, but before anything else happens, the plane explodes. I doubt Kate is dead. The whole arc for the entire season made no sense whatsoever, so it's not like I care.
The heist itself was slick as always with Mozzie, Neal, and Alex working in tandem. It went by quickly without any hiccups which is part of the reason why the schemes aren't that interesting. The end result is always a victory for a good guys, and there are rarely consequences.
Score: 9.1/10
