Review - Stargate Universe Season 1 Episode 7 Earth

Stargate Universe has some good and then some really bad. Chloe is constantly whining and crying, or having sex. This show is so blatantly sexist that Joe Mallozzi (one of the writers) didn't even try to defend the show. Women are given zero respect by the writers and they don't seem to mind.

Why would Young's wife sleep with someone who doesn't look remotely like her husband? Even if Young with in Telford's body, it's still Telford's body. Doesn't she have any problems with that? No wonder Telford showed up at her house at the end of the episode. Maybe they were already having an affair, but the whole situation is messed up.

The stones are one of the most obvious, stupid plot devices on television right now. This technology comes out of nowhere and provides a perfect solution to connect back to Earth. Then people can talk to the bigwigs at the Pentagon, go clubbing, and have sex with spouses. The stones also allow for an easy solution which would be scientists working on the Destiny 24/7. The writers ignore that, choosing to take a path infinitely harder. At least if they are going to introduce such powerful technology like the stones, put some limitations on it so we're not asking questions why everyone is acting so stupid.

A plus was the lack of imminent disaster from the environment. Instead, it was according to Rush, imminent danger due to the scientists on Earth. They had a plan to get back to Earth, but Rush unilaterally choose to sabotage the plan, scrapping any chance to get back to Earth in the near future. And when he told people he did this, they didn't care. I thought people didn't trust Rush, but now they're fine with Rush manipulating everything.

I still don't understand how the writers think changing the tone of the show equaled more douches, more sex, more clubbing, and lame women. There must come a point when SGU has a real story that is unrelated to characters interactions. The only thing driving the show are the characters and their backstories, and that isn't working.

Score: 8.4/10

I really liked the first couple of episodes but if it doesn't improve, I'll stop watching. Keep Rush as the anti-hero and let people hate his guts.. this episode should have been scrapped, no action, not really anything that pushed the show forward... So hopefully next ep will be better, can't get worse...
