For as long as I can remember (which isn't that long), every episode of Lie to Me has had a life or death situation. I can't remember the last time there was an episode where guns weren't involved. "The Royal We," a wholesale damning of the pageant industry, is by no means revolutionary, but does provide a welcome change to the amped up episodes as of late.
On the other hand, the usual Loker bashing was stupid. Torres suggests that Lightman pushes Loker around because he wants Loker in the field, but as far as I can tell, Lightman is his normal self, an egomaniacal douchebag.
