Review - The X-Files Season 1 Episode 9 Space

"Space" is an episode to show how cool space and NASA is, and feels like a real X-Files episode for about 10 seconds. The X-Files works best when it can be personal, exciting, and scary. "Space" isn't any of those. Mulder and Scully aren't involved except for Mulder's love of NASA and his constant explanations to Scully. Personally, I'm not interested in the technical side of NASA, so his words flew right over my head.

The supernatural element of the episode is a "ghost" which originated somewhere in space and came back to Earth with Colonel Belt. The ghost doesn't generate enough terror simply because it is never a visible force in the episode. The few times it does show up, the ghost is more cheesy than scary.

Like "The Jersey Devil," "Space" is a memorable episode, but for all the wrong reasons. It's boring, plodding, and completely uninteresting. All the NASA bells and whistles can't help an episode that has no plot.

Score: 7.3/10
