Every sci-fi show has an episode here and there about the dangers of technology. The concept isn't bad and has real world implications. However, the execution in "Ghost In The Machine" leaves much to be desired. The machine, the enemy in the episode, isn't very threatening other than pulling a couple pranks, the greatest of which is Scully almost getting chopped to pieces. C.O.S is a far cry from HAL 9000 there is hardly any danger in the episode.
The undertones of the episode is actually pretty well-done. While Mulder and Scully battle against the DoD guys that want to use Wilczek and his creations, there is an invisible war raging, an inevitable battle where technology eventually rules all. And it is heavy-handed that a machine would go on a crazed rampage since nothing like that has ever come close to happening in real life.
Like many season 1 episodes, this one shows the growing divide between Mulder and Scully and the rest of the FBI. When Lamana pays a visit, Mulder is more than generous to help even though he knows he's being used for advancement, but Mulder doesn't care.
One more episode down. I'll try to do one more today and catch up tomorrow.
Score: 8.4/10
