"Død Kalm" is held up by the creepy aura of the ghost ship, where everyone, except one, is growing older and older by the second. We know Mulder and Scully will survive and maintain their flawless features, but we see them visually age--the makeup makes them look like zombies! The confined spaces and dark shadows playing across the walls provides a perfect backdrop for the struggles between the characters.
After Mulder's condition continues to deteriorate, they face the tough choice of what to do next. The captain who brought them there first tells Scully to let Mulder die before barricading himself with the water. Next, Scully gets some water, but Mulder tells her she should drink it. In the end, the ship is rattled and the water is lost. This may be the most dire situation they've ever been in. When all hope seems lost, they pass out only to find themselves in a hospital. The big cop out is very awkward and ruins the episode to an extent. You have to wonder what could have happened if the episode was tightened so there was more time left in the end.
