Review - Stargate Universe Season 1 Episode 8 Time

Everyone hyped this episode as the best episode yet. I would agree, but only because the rest of the episodes have been so weak. There wasn't as many of the elements that usually make the episodes bad and the story was actually fairly interesting. The problem is that it was a time traveling episode which will probably be a rare occurrence. Next week, SGU will probably fall back to everything we don't like.

The funny thing about this episode is that it is defined by what wasn't in the episode. There were no scenes with the stupid stones which meant no scenes on Earth. There was barely any of those ridiculous talks between characters save for the worst part of the episode which was Eli speaking to a dying Chloe.

I thing about SGU that confuses me the most is Chloe. She's always crying and being a general annoyance, but everyone still treats her as if she is actually useful and important. The only two things going for her is that she's hot and her father was a senator. Eli has a weird fixation on her because she's hot, and as he proclaimed in "Time" his only best friend. Scott almost broke down when he heard Chloe had died, mostly because he liked having sex with her. Other than inducing men to like her, Chloe has had absolutely no contribution. Why can't she just go join the rest of the people that don't help?

There were several excellent scenes where Eli was talking to TJ and Rush. Maybe it never really happened, but at least someone watched it. But then again, the people that watched the original tape are all dead also. For all the great emotional moments Eli had in the episode, they proved kind of useless in the end. The one thing that irked me about time travel in Stargate is that the team at the end of the episodes aren't the exact same ones as the team in the beginning.

The director and producers were trying to make the episode unique with the use of the Kino which was very good in the beginning. By the middle of the episode, the sound effects and shaking really started to annoy me. It added a certain element of realism that became hard to watch.

If Stargate Universe is to succeed, the writers need to come of with more episodes like this one with a solid blend of action, mystery, and drama. And not the piss poor excuse for drama in the previous episodes. Drama as in real characters and real reactions.

Score: 8.8/10
