I want to say that American Horror Story is a solid show with good characters and an actual plot, but I can't. At best, AMS is about a broken family who moves into a haunted house where weird shit happens. Big emphasis on weird shit happens. It's not even scary most of the time. The audience is bombarded with horror trope after horror trope, without any context other than that it takes place in the house, and the whole scenario makes little sense. The characters are placed under the house's mercy and lots of disturbing sexual stuff happens to them.
It seems like Ryan Murphy created the show to show off his ideas and editing techniques, to create a show where something messed up happens each week to regular human beings. This idea may be promising, but not as the show was conceived. If he wanted to do the crazy shit happens thing and throw everything at the wall, he should have made an anthology series or something which didn't have continuity. This way there wouldn't be 50 different threads heading into the second episode with no logical direction.
Score: 7.5/10
