Review - Supernatural Season 6 Episode 3 The Third Man

Three episodes into the sixth season, and I'm starting to feel better about the direction Supernatural is going in. "The Third Man" doesn't reinvent the show, but returned to the basics with a couple horror scenes and a solid plot which has major ramifications for the rest of the season.

The return of Castiel, who is funny under any circumstance, helped greatly, bringing the angels into the fold. Since the Apocalypse, they've been out of control. On one side, there's Raphael who wants more of the Apocalypse, Castiel on the other, and then angels like Balthazar who does whatever he wants. In the absence of God, there is practically no limit to what an angel can and cannot do. Their sheer power leaves humans defenseless and practically alone to defend themselves.

One of those is a kid who gives his soul in exchange for a sawed-off Moses staff (Biblically inaccurate, but totally hilarious), causing Egyptian Plague symptoms on three cops who turn out to have framed the kid's brother. There's two good fights against Raphael and his angels, along with Balthazar helping in the end, until they trap Balthazar and force him to give the soul back.

There's also something wrong with Sam. He's holding back on something, whether it be what happened in Hell or after he came back. We see the problem manifest in a hooker (like Don Draper!) at the beginning of the episode and his allowance of Castiel to go ahead and hurt the boy.

Score: 9.0/10
