Review - Justified Season 1 Episode 5 The Lord of War and Thunder

Let's face it; Justfied is a procedural. I like procedurals, so you won't hear a complaint from me. However, if you bash procedurals and then glorify Justified, it's rather silly. Critics love to love FX, which undoubtedly has created somewhat of a legend around itself, but let's be objective. There's great writing, acting, directing, and the characters are compelling. It's not more or less serialized than any other procedural. That's the wonderful thing about launching a procedural on FX. People will start comparing it to The Shield regardless of its merits, and soon it becomes more than an enjoyable procedural.

"The Lord of War and Thunder" was my favorite episode since the pilot. Raylan's father, Arlo, who has been mentioned many times in the first four episodes, finally shows up, arrested after smashing some guy's things. It turns out the guy, Perkins, is renting Arlo's house and wasn't paying. Raylan instant suspects a rent scam, but soon learns that his father went further to steal $75,000 from Perkins. Arlo has an ingrained sense of dishonesty and doesn't care what anyone thinks. Raylan tried to help and was supportive for most of the episode, but the awful truth is that his father lies and cheats like breathing air.
