Review - Bones Season 5 Episode 16 The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

I bet the fans will be conflicted with this episode like they were with "The End in the Beginning." Again, the episode was written by Hart Hanson and had huge significance on the relationship between Booth and Brennan. In "The Parts in the Sum of the Whole," he completely retconned the entire series out of the blue. Hart loves making those bold episodes that fall flat on their faces. A flashback episode is fine, but can we please not have those crazy revelations that make no sense in light of what we've seen the past 5 years?

Everything is going splendidly until about two-thirds through the episode. Brennan and Booth tell Sweets about their first case together, knowledge Sweets did not have and wasn't in his book. It's a fairly simple case where Booth knows a judge was the murderer, but Caroline needs evidence. We see Cam suggest using Brennan to Booth and the initial animosity between Hodgins and Zack, who is missed even more now that we got another taste of him. There also is the beginning of the Jeffersonian experiments which have become a staple. Alas, "king of the lab" wasn't created yet. Angela and Brennan had just met two weeks ago and we see Brennan recruiting her.

It all goes downhill once Brennan punches the judge twice. Under Caroline's orders, Booth has to fire her, and to do so, the get drunk. Brennan suggests that they sleep together, and outside they kiss passionately. Brennan pulls away. The rational part of her realizes the effect of the tequila. After that, they start bickering and insulting each other, culminating with Brennan slapping Booth and stomping off. They don't work together again for until a year later. This implausible revelation turns Sweets's book on its head and seemingly invalidates his theory. It does the same thing for the fans, making the years of UST seem inconsequential.

Booth and Brennan leave Sweets's office and Booth finally tells Brennan his feelings. For the first time, he doesn't hold back and takes a gamble, kissing her. Brenna pushes he away literally and figuratively, because she is afraid it won't work out. Blah, blah, blah. This is one of the reasons why I stopped watching earlier in the season. Stupid plot devices and fake roadblocks sometimes become the centerfold of the show which become exponentially more annoying each time.

Score: Sorry, but I'm going to have to give this one 8.4/10
