Review - NCIS Season 7 Episode 16 Mother's Day

Gibbs has always been the moral beacon of NCIS. He takes down the bad guys by any means, and ensures that justice prevails even if the law does not.In "Mother's Day," Gibbs does the opposite. He follows the law to an extent, but lets his ex mother in-law get away with murder. This surprising, dark turn of events will surely have lasting consequences (or at least I hope it does). I don't want to speculate on character arcs, but this season has focused more on Gibbs, and there was news about something life changing at the end of the season, so we may see the descent of Gibbs as he compromises his morals for various reasons. If that's the case, I'm fine with what the writers did. If not, I wonder what the writers were thinking.

His ex mother in-law, Joann Fielding (Gena Rowlands), is the fiancée of a dead Navy officer. There are very few suspects, and the majority of the episode was spent with Gibbs and Joann talking their issues over. Everything seemed so random because Shannon and Kelly died so long ago. At least it showed a bit of Gibbs's past.

The conclusion was utterly bizarre and popped up out of nowhere. Follow this string. Fielding wanted to get back at the Mexican cartel who killed Shannon and Kelly, so she got cozy with the Navy guy who was dealing drugs down in Mexico and working with the cartel. Twenty years too late...

M Allison Hart is really a pain, but Gibbs keeps inviting her in.  He indirectly uses her to get Joann off the hook. She clearly doesn't care for justice or even retribution. What's her deal? And what's Gibbs's deal?

Score: 8.5/10
